Mothers day was originally 'Mothering Sunday', when most were allowed one day off from work to go to their 'Mother Church' in their home village. This usually involved walking all of the day to get there and back to see their families.
At this time there were no days off from work that started at 4am, for those in 'service' and ended when their masters went to bed often after midnight.
It was a religious holiday, that turned into the showing apreciation of our mothers' then not too long ago, the fathers were given a day to get presents....this one is entirely comercial.

Greghart is almost right Fathers Day was create by greetings card companies. I think in the UK that mothers Day was called originally called Mothering Sunday, to honour the work mothers did within the family.

To honour thy mother and thy father.
Although thats not really the reason.
Mothers day was to show appreciation for what the mother does in the home, since the father was generally the bread winner.
Fathers day is a recent thing in comparison is came about in the early days of equality when it was not known by that name.

*glass half empty* So Hallmark can make cards - just like Secretary's Day, Grandparent's Day... do you really think people care about mommies and daddies? Or do they just get them a tie and some roses?
*glass is half full now*
Because we shoul 'honor out mother and father': they brought ya into the world, they fed you, bought you clothes and a bed and that toy you wanted. They taught you things no school could teach, they encourage you, they always want what's best.
And most importantly... no matter what, they love you. Aw. =D

It's very challenging to raise children, & a true mother & father should be recognized for their selfless acts of sacrifice in raising children to be responsible adults. We have these days set aside to thank our parent(s) & to let them know we love them & appreciate them.

Greg said it first, to make money for card companies. But it is nice to pay thanks to parents and those (like godparents) who do or for us older people, have done so much for us.
