Originally, the guy on the horse drawn carriage sat on the right, driving on the left all over Europe (the rest of the world didn't had wheels, until they learned it from them, no actually the Sumerians, today Iraqis, had the first wheels, 8000years ago). The conservative Brits just kept it that way in the car, the Australians, Japanese, New Zealanders too. I think some other Asian countries have still the English way.

It was natural to walk or ride on the left side of a path or raod. This kept your sword arm free in case of attack. This situation changed in Europe under Napoleon Bonaparte who decreed that his soldiers should be able to march freely across Europe on the right side of a path and everyone should just get out of their way. Basically, driving on the right started with Napoleon's empire and spread from there and just became the customary way of doing things.
But he never conquered us............

King Henry the 5th was said to have an unsightly mole on his left cheek and so ordered the whole of his kingdom to travel on the left, this way all passers by would see him from his good side.
