Ok, the previous owner didn't know how to take car of cars, at all. Good thing I never Directly met the man myself. Its and 84 Monte Carlo with a 229 V6. The transmission is leaking terrible. I figure the first thing I should try and replace is the gasket on the pan. what would be the next easiest thing to try if that doesn't work? If it is too hard I am gonna just replace the whole thing.

Jack the car up and get under it (be absolutely certain to support it with jack stands). Clean the bottom of the trans. very well with rags or paper towels. Now start the car (in "Park" obviously) and see if you can tell where the leak originates. If it's coming from above the pan check the dipstick tube (it has an o-ring around the base). If it's leaking from the rear (where the driveshaft yoke slips in) the rear seal is leaking. Remove the driveshaft (expect some fluid loss) and pry out the old seal with a large screwdriver. Tap in the new one and you're done. If the leak is from the front (coming out of the drain hole in the flywheel cover) you have a front seal/pump leak. Unfortunately, that's a job that requires removing the transmission, but after that the seal itself is as easy to replace as the rear one. HTH.

Changing the trans pan is easy. Go to the auto parts store and get a filter kit. Remove the bolts and drain the fluid.
Replace the filter and gasket, but snugg the bolts do not tighten real tight.as you will worp the gasket.
Refill the trans with fluid.

bigoilman pretty much gave the best answer to your question although he left out the cooler lines as a possible place for the leak everything else was good

it is not too hard...and that should fix the leak. Replace the trans filter while you are at it
