Karen Carpenter is still considered one of the best vocalists ever. She died of anorexia in the midst of her popularity, but not what you'd call the beginning of her carreer.
Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, Big Bopper, Patsy Cline, Jimmi Hendrix, all died while still quite popular I believe
