I tried adding a humidifier to the duct attached to the furnace. I cut the hole too large and broke the humidifier. I've given up and just want to patch the hole. What's the best approach? The hole is approximately 9" x 9".

First get some sheet metal, cut it to 11" x11". Place it over the hole you cut, drill holes about every 2 to 3 inches apart. Put some caulk around the opening, place the metal cap back in place and screw it in place (sheet metal screws). or you can use rivets. Last thing to do is to place air duct tape around the edge of the patch work.

Buy a piece of metal to cover the hole. Attach with duct tape.Use as much as it takes.
