I think if gas was taxed 100%. people would think a little more small businesses would get exemptions and people might not be as wastefull as they are with un-renewable resources if they were paying twice as much for it.
look at the programs the government could start with that money like oh, say free health care for every one.

I feel pretty bad that most of can't see past the price.
the U.S. has some of the cheapest gas on the planet but some day it will raise higher than you expect. Please think a little of what could be done.

Well, let see:

The price of everything would go up! Most of the stuff you by is delivered by truck. If there is a large increase in the price of gas, and it is expected to remain, then the price of all those goods go up. It is a basic rule of economics.

While people are struggling to meet the high cost of food you just imposed on them, a lot of them will find themselves unable to get to work, so unemployment will soar, causeing a larger tax burden on those who can work.

These people would eventually have to turn to crime (and I could not blame them) to feel their families, so we would have to have more police (read more local taxes), and they would need cars to get around it, burning more and more gas, which would proft the federal government, but the local and state would bear most of the cost from the results of this brilliant plan.

Now, we will have the bread winners locked up and the famileys go on welfare (there is where your increased funds can go, to feed all the people you put out of work, but, if you know anything about economics, then you will know that the cost will outrun the gains), with all of the attached stigma that goes along with it (it does not matter if your neighbor is also on welfare, if you are use to working and haveing a good life, then the fall to living on handouts would be mind numbing).

Do I need to go on!

One thing that anyone with any sort of training knows, you do not over tax necessities!

Oh yea, what would happen if everyone decided to go out today and by electric cars to avoid you plan? There would not be enough by a factor of 1000 or so.

Anyway, aside for all that, it would be a good idea. . .

A hundred percent tax on gasoline would raise the price of
regular unleaded to over $10.00 a gallon, in my area. It is already over $3.00 with the current tax rate.
I am 34. White. College Graduate. My husband is 52. White.
Disabled. We have 2 children ages 2 and 3.
I work full-time for $8.00 per hour which is average pay scale for jobs around here.
We live in a small town and most people who live here have at least an hour commute one way to work each day. I car pool with another lady and we split the gas cost , each paying 50 percent.
At $3.09 per gallon, it costs $150.00 a week to get back and
forth to work. She pays $75 and I pay $75.
If the gas tax were raised to what you suggest, I along with
many others would not be able to afford transportation to work. So, I would be forced to quit my job.
If I did that, my rent would not be paid, nor my utilities.
We would be homeless.
Apparently, you do not work for $8.00 an hour and were born with a sliver spoon in your mouth. Free health care don't mean a thing, if you don't have a roof over your head.
Your idea stinks and isn't very well thought out.

A 100% tax on gasoline would cause a good chunk of the population to be unable to afford it in the first place. People who are already living paycheck to paycheck would lose their jobs because they couldn't afford the gas for their cars to get there. So then you'd have more people on welfare and other aid programs. Even if all that tax money went to those programs, it wouldn't matter - so few people would be able to afford gas that the tax really wouldn't bring in that much money!

Most people don't live in areas where cars are an option. I live an area that is just simply not set up for walking or riding a bike. If I lived in an urban area, I would probably not be so reliant on my car, but as it is, a 100% tax on gas would succeed only in driving me to the poor house.

one reason is the extra money would have to supplement the increase on welfare because most of your everyday workers could not afford to drive to work , so " you can not get fries with that" , and nothing else because no one working in food service or running a cash register ,or even the tellers at your bank could afford to drive to work , and as for the reticules " Free health care " there will already be a giant increase in taxes to fund this , and if you think it is for you , it is sad ,. Hollywood supports Hillary as does most rich business CEO' s Hillary and her stupid idea to give free health care will allow all of the millionaires in Hollywood to be able to go to rehab 4-5 times per year at our expense at the cost of 20- 30 thousand per week each, not counting every other junkie that does not have self control , and yes that is all an addiction is , tell me it is a disease , I will prove you wrong , there is no such thing as an automatic addiction , it is mental ,due to no self control , I have been down that road , everything they said was an instant addiction I tried just to see if it really was and I stopped cold turkey after years, I did stuff for years , and was still able to pay my bills , and keep my house , still party everyday because it is a desire to continue or a want to, and I for one will say it is not my problem some elses parents did not teach them self control nad they fell in love with dope , it is not my problem , make their family pay the bill not me , and not my tax dollars...plus oh intelligent one , the average person will not be able to afford a day off from work to go to the doctor much less the gas to drive there for this so called free health care .... so please un install your head from your *ss and get back to the real world

They tried to tax cigarettes into submission, then they got a taste for the tax dollars and there is no way cigarettes will ever be banned, because people are addicted and the government makes too much money. If you jack the taxes on gas, people will still drive, i go to school 34 miles away from my home, i can't drop school, so i'll just have to spend all my money on stupid gas. All that could be accomplished would be to make people poor and government rich and lazy.

And how do people get around where there is no mass transit..like 80% of the nation...
We live out in the country...taking my kids to the bus(public school) stop is a 4 mile ride..the school is 17 miles
The grocery store is 15 miles...
I guess for you libs in the city with no cars you could live...but out here cars and gas are our life lines....

AND healthcare for free IS A NIGHTMARE..just ask our friends in Canada...4 hours adverage wait to see a doc...real good..and forget specialists....

Better idea, you fiqure up how much you would have to spend to pay that, then write the feds a check every year. Do you even think about all the working poor that would make unable to afford to drive to work.

The only problem with it is that there are many that can't afford to pay that kind of tax. Don't get me wrong, I see where there could be many benefits from it.

Could it be that could single handily bankrupt the private sector, and since that is where all the jobs are. Nobody would have a job to pay any taxes.
