OMG - same problem!! I found that part of my problem was that my nails (especially the cuticles) and hands were dry, so I got some Queen Helene lotion (very little alcohol in this one - check lables!! Alcohol is BAD!) and spent a whole weekend just rubbing it into my hands and fingers. I still use this several times a day. Then at night, I use a vitamin E cream that soaks right in and nourishes the nails while I sleep. My second problem was that I had edges on my nails that would catch on stuff, so I'd try to bit those down -- ack!! So I started carrying a nail file (just a cheapie emery board- nothing fancy) to smooth those out as soon as I noticed them. Can't say I never catch myself biting my nails anymore (especially the edges still) but I'm better enough to where they're long enough to put polish on and not look stupid. Good luck!

I'm 22, and still have a nail biting issue. But one thing that keeps me from nibbling on them (for months at a time!) is to keep putting acryclic false nails over them.
Try to find a nail salon that will do this for you, unless you can get your hands on everything you need, and are confident that you can do a good job on your own hands (which takes a LOT of practice). A "full set" of nails usually runs 15 to 25 dollars, depending on where you live and where you go.
These nails are going to be so thick (and so gorgeous!) that you won't want to touch them. And even if you do, you're probably gonna hurt your teeth before you take a chunk out of them, just as long as you find a good salon.

I had the same problem for years and it seemed hopeless. Here are a few tricks: beeswax, sillyputty, play-do, stressball, anything to keep your fingers occupied. Another trick is to paint your nails with a special bad tasteing nail polish that you can buy at the drug store. I found that vinigor worked just as well, though. My favorite trick was the rewards. When you do this you have to be totaly honest! Set a goal for yourself, like not biteing my nails for 2 days. If you do it, then reward yourself like with candy or new clothes or inviteing a friend to the movies. If you make your goals then keep setting them higher, like for a week.

I do the same thing. Try chili powder or hot sauce on them. There is also "Bite No More" that you can get at Sally Beauty Supply. It worked for me for a while. :) You have to re-apply it after you wash your hands though (same with everything). I wish you the best of luck!!! When you bite your nails til they bleed, try squirting some Bactine on them. Also, on the weekends, try wearing gloves or keeping bandaids over your nails. Eventually, they might get long enough so you can get fake nails that are much more difficult to bite (acrylic - not press-on).

Poor baby, my child did the same thing but she starting getting those nail put on not long natural looking now but it worked. Something is making u nervous get a grib on yourself and pray about what is going on in your life. Nasty to put your fingers in or hands in your mouth. Treat yourself to nail jobs for awhile. Also, make sure the nail shop is clean or buy your own nail and feet equipment. Good lucky.

My friend told me about this new kind of nail polish out that tastes horrible so when you bite your nails it makes you have this bad taste in your mouth for about an hour. Try it. [: I have the same problem too, by the way, so this will most likely work for you!

Calia is right! Go to a professional and ask for acrylic nails or gel nails, it will be impossible for you to bite those fake nails, and once you start seeing your hands feminine and polished you'll want them to stay that way.

You can try using a nail polish like this...
http://www.skin-spa.com/ecrinal-bitter.htm
There is no odor to it and it tastes aweful! You just need to make sure not to lick your fingers when you're eating. lol This is what helped me quit biting my nails.
