I thought it went away, but I was wrong. Look, yesterday was my sister's birthday and along with my boyfriend, we went out. So the last place we stopped out was a music store where she saw the new Fallout Boy CD.
I told her I'd get it for her as a birthday gift, and I did. The woman at the counter (she's white) saw the CD and asked me, "Do black people listen to this. I thougth they listened to black people music!" Basicaly she's saying, "Don't get it, its not for your kind."
My sister was crying all the way home and I told the manger. The lady did get fired, but my sister's heart was broken, even though she got the CD for free. All I'm asking you is what would you do.

As you can see, *if* is spelled wrong.

You did the right thing, and there is really nothing else you can do. I am sorry about your sister, but there are alot of people out there like that. Maybe you could talk to her and tell her not to pay attention to that person, and that she is beautiful no matter what.

Did you make that up? I can't believe that someone would say or suggest that.
If it's true, that's pretty ignorant on the sales-persons part. For one that's a racist comment. For two, people of all races listen to all sorts of music. We live in a day and age where there is no white people or black people music! I can't believe a salesperson at a MUSIC store doesn't already see that.
I would have spoke to the manager too. Maybe the woman had some sort of mental disability or something.

I am white and I have to say that I think that woman was way out of line. I'm so sorry you and your sister had to go through that. I thought we coming to a point where stereotypes no longer had a place in our society. If it had happened to me, I would have told her a few things. First: I would have asked her exactly what she thought "black people music" was? Second: regardless of her answer, I would have let her know, before talking to the manager (although I still would have done that too), that her comment offended me and that her narrow-mindedness and stereotyping is callous and completely out of line in our society. My hope is that when the manager fired her, he/she told her why because if she doesn't know why, then she will continue to do it at her next job. People like that who work with the public only spread their negativity and shallow views if they are not educated as to what is not appropriate. I hope that you and your sister can understand and know that this is in no way a reflection of you, but rather a reflection of this woman, the way she was brought up and her inability to see past her nose.

I would be shocked if that happened. Just tell your sister that people have the right to listen to whatever music they enjoy -- Opera, Rap, Hip Hop, Classic Rock, Oldies, Jazz, Blues, Country, whatever -- regardless of their color, ethnicity or religion. Music crosses all borders! Also explain to your sister that there is still ignorance and intolerance in this world. The majority of people are not this way, but throughout life she will encounter a minority who are. When she does encounter these people, she should hold her head up high, maintain her dignity and composure, and "set the record straight" in an effort to educate those unfortunate souls who belong to the "I D ten T" club.

I hate people who are like that, and I so would have explained to her calmly that while different skin color, all people tend to like different kinds of music, some prejudice and stereotypical people don't think or even consider certain people to like. I'm white, but I listen to all kinds of music, it's not so much the artist or anything as the beat and rhythm. I'm glad that you took it to the manager and the woman was fired, but you should tell your sister that there are still people out there who think misconceptions and prejudices toward certain kinds of people for all kinds of different reasons.

Honey, I think you should explain to your sister how you felt when that horrible woman said tat comment to you,you should explain to her that no one should have to feel that way just because you are a different color! Obviously that Caucasian woman was closed minded and still living in the 30's.What you did was the right thing to do, because if you would have stayed quiet this lady would of kept of doing it to many other people that weren't of her kindSo in my opinion you did the right thing! SPEAK YOUR MIND AND DON'T LET ANYONE MAKE YOU FEEL INFERIOR THAN THEM!

i would have lumped the ****. I'm sorry but i cant believe i even read that. i'm so sorry that happened to you. its never happened to me but once about a month ago, i was sitting at a bus stop and a woman asked me the time. i told her the time and she looked at me funny. i asked her what was wrong and she said "i never expected you to speak like that with such a cockney accent." I'm brown in colour, half english, half mauritian. I couldn't belived it. It just shows that unfortunately there are still some very ignorant people out there and they are not even worth the time of day.

Well you can't really do anything to the woman at the counter (even if you are gonna do something bad to her), but you can cheer up you sister by asking what kind of things that can make her up (other than doing something nasty to the woman).

I would have gone to the manager as well. However, I would let my sister know that she has the right to listen to whatever music she wants and nobody can take that from her. How sad that there are still such close minded people out there!
