I think that most who are against it tend to lean back toward the Christian roots of marriage and the fact that in the Bible it states "one man, one woman". Also, I think that in a tax-payer sense, they are thinking that someone will think "well, heck, we're roomies, so let's get married for the tax break, and we'll get a divorce later when one of us decides to move out."
And, then there's the whole idea of the fact that people tend to be afraid of what they don't know.

Same here, I am gay and I have known since I was six, however there have been points in my life when I was somewhat attracted to guys. However, I am hundreds of times happier with a female.
But as to the gay marriage issue. I really, really hate it when people use this rationality, but because thousands of years ago when Jesus came he didn't say marry gays, he apparently said that marriage is the union between a man and a woman. However, I can't really identify evidence to support this, which is really stupid. The Catholic doxology shuns gay marriage, which hurts the gay marriage legislature. However, I am in full support, obviously, of gay marriage, and I don't think that people that are in love and have a family should be prohibited from getting married.
Another rationality that I heard is that gays aren't meant to have kids, so why should they need marriage. Its an issue that is reflected time and time again, however, many gay families do have children, and many times those kids are sent to foster care, etc. if a partner dies. It would be hard to regulate all rights, etc. without marriage.
My father is actually against gay marriage and believes that homosexuals don't really exist and its a choice, thus it should be obvious that he doesn't no that I am gay :). The rationality that he uses is that homosexuality is against the traditional morality as described by the Catholic church, etc. This is a very hurtful, as you can imagine, rationality and I find it very difficult to listen to him describe it. However, that's the way this world operates and until things change, gay marriage is a long ways away.
EDIT: In response to the post below, the gay issue has dated back to the Greek empire and before. Greeks would encourage homosexuality between unwed males. Also, Spartans have records of lesbian activities dating earlier than the previous. Also, the word lesbian derives from the name of the island Lesbos, which was a Greek island where they encouraged lesbian activity in a way to empower the female gender in response to male domination.

i'm a lesbian woman who's firmly adverse to comparable-intercourse marriage. comparable-intercourse marriage isn't a 'marriage' in any respect. Marriage is a God-given present this is meant to link the two sexes, guy and woman, parents. I do think of that comparable-intercourse couples, (I.E me and my companion) ought to settle for finished criminal rights and reward. I do think of that's unfair that contained in the state I stay in (Florida) technically speaking, my companion Christine is a stranger to me. yet we ought to constantly no longer be married. i'm fascinated with civil unions for comparable-intercourse companions, although.

I do not believe in homosexuality. Let alone marriage btween the same sex. Marriage is between a man and a woman. So, if they want to, they have the ability to reproduce.....some strait couples do not get the chance because of infertility......Anyways, a man and a man CANNOT reproduce. Same with 2 women. How do you think you got here? It goes WAYYYYYY back when. Have you ever notice that the 'gay issue' was never around before the 50's? But, people want ot start ****, so they started a big comotion of liking the same sex.....It's a sad, sad, world knowing that people like you are causing such a disturbance to reproduction...
Though, I will pray for you and hope that you will realize. May God bless you Lost and Confused.

You're paying attention to the opinions of the wrong people. Not everyone is against gay marriage. I, for one, am all for it!

People like to control things they don't understand.
I don't get why people have such issues with gay marriage...how does it affect them if I'm wearing a wedding band???

Their hold on to whatever they hold dear is very precarious so they need to hate other people and put them down to make themselves look or feel bigger or stronger.

Because it is against every religion, and most people are religious. And God intended to have men with women. Not men with men and women with women.
