A prerequisite course HAS to be taken in order to move on into that other course curriculum you are looking at.

A recommended preparation course isn't a necessity, but they would like you to take it so that they KNOW you have the right knowledge to build the further course curriculum on.

Recommended preparation means it's strongly suggested that you take it, and prerequisite means you have to have it before taking the next course.

Prerequisite means you HAVE to have taken it.

recommended preparation means that it would be a good idea to have taken it, but not required to do so

"prerequisite" means REQUIRED whereas "recommended preparation" is only a recommendation, not a requirement.
