Here's the link where you can read all about it...the cave is an allegory and is supposed to represent the duality of the universe and how the mind works...either way the link should explain everything...

He means it's a place of illusion and darkness.Nietzsche has a different take on it obvious in Thus Spoke Zarathustra.He sees the cave as a place of enlightenment and learning.A place you fight monsters(metaphorical) to obtain truth in a playful and joyous manner.

The cave overall represents delving into the depths of the human mind.Delving into uncertainty.
