I think it varies depending on the age bracket.
Example: When a middle school student population votes for a cheerleader, they tend to vote for the most good-looking ones. Not necessarily nice or snobby. They don't care or they may not know the person.
As we get older, I think popularity tends to lean toward those who are nice and those who are smart, and sometimes those who just have a lot of money. Most of those things aren't important to a middle-schooler.

I hate this more than anything. Unfortunately what usually makes people popular is good looks and money. The ones that you were talking about that were just nice people are usually very easy on the eyes too. The world has become a horrible place nobody can just have fun and enjoy life because there always to busy trying to appeal somebody else. I ve had every type of friend and I can tell you that they all suck. Look out for number one...be nice to all but always watch your back. People are vicious now days.

Other people are what makes someone popular - another person's contribution to that person makes them popular. Some people are drawn to people who treat other people mean while other people love a person's positive vibe. I think the one that's more common is the one about the person who is nice and everyone likes to be around them because these are the people I knew in junior high school and high school.

People are usually popular because they have an attribute that the majority of people like or find appealing, unfortunately that attribute isn't always positive in and of itself. People can be popular because they have lots of material possessions, are great at sports or are attractive. Hopefully you'll find that by having a kind and outgoing personality, one that tries to get along with others and has integrity will be the person that maintain their popularity throughout their lives because they are genuinely nice people.

The things that make people popular are...
1. Personality
2. Looks
3. Money
4. Car
5. The "in" clothes
I personally would rather hang out with the people with good personalities. I'm just not the kind of person who hangs out with people I dont like.

The whole "jock" stereotype gets a bad rap...popular for being snobs and jerks. In reality, a lot of the so-called "jocks" I went to school with were extremely well-mannered and polite to people who weren't at the forefront of the social world. The captain of my high school football team was about the nicest dude you'd ever meet. I can't say with complete certianty, therefore, which type of popularity is more common. All I know is that it's more of something that comes naturally to people inclined to making friends. I wasn't privy to this gift, so I realized that and stuck with the friends I had, and was much happier for it.

You know, someone always make out a popular person as the rich and snotty debutantes. Most of the popular people I know are outgoing and funny...but can be somewhat catty..guys tend to be more down-to-earth when popular.
But yeah, there are the nice popular people. I don't have a lot of those at my school...they're just nice, but they're cool through my eyes.

External beauty; internal beauty=reflected in a warm and engaging personality, with a bright and welcoming smile? If you've got that? you'll be popular....the underlying component is that people who think they are like you will want to be around you...they'll be "comfortable"....and people who envy you will always "hold you in an esteemed/enviable" position--And for the more shallow and superficial groups, have a lot of money, wear alot of bling & flash and they'll be dazzled by the brilliance of what you've got (and not even bother with who you are)...As long as they have access to your TOYS, you'll have friends....ask any preschooler!

I think the truly popular people are the ones who are popular because of who they are.
The people who have lots of friends because they have money aren't really popular - their money is. People are in it for the money and just tolerate the person because there are rewards for doing so.

Nowadays it's use or get used, maybe very negative but yes that's the way it is unfortunately.
It's such a bad bad selfish world.
Their always jealous people, and it already starts at school, it can make someone unpopular.
