Try phrasing your affirmations as either
- a positive action you will take
- a positive result that you will achieve

"I will not smoke a cigarette today."
"I will make an A in this course."

These statements are helpful, but not by themselves. You have to really believe what you're saying and you have to follow through with action.

If you do that, they are helpful because they cause you to think different kinds of thoughts and take different kinds of actions...the kinds of thoughts and actions related to the goals expressed in your affirmation.

But don't expect affirmations to work if all you do is say the words.

Affirmations do work. However, the most important thing is not what you say, but how you FEEL when you're saying it.

When using affirmations, you get what you believe, so if you are doing an affirmation and you do not FEEL IT and BELIEVE IT than you will get what you feel and believe. If you say an affirmation and do not believe it (you feel that the affirmation is not true) you will get what you do believe.

The trick is to make your affirmations believable. The way to do this is to make your affirmations a SMALL stretch from where you are. For example, if you want to lose weight don't say "I am now 50 pounds lighter", but do say "Every day my body is growing slimmer." If you want more money, don't say "I'm a millionaire," but do say "My income is constantly increasing."

Louise Hay's book "You Can Heal Your Life" has some good information about using affirmations. Sondra Ray's "Loving Relationships" also has some excellent info on the correct way to use affirmations.
