For the same reason that witch doctors wear headresses...it is the need of the mass to respect authority and have a visual representation of it.
It is however amongst the silliest uniforms to be found on the planet!

Its because u know u have to be very serious in court so they wear those stupid wigs to tease u cos they know u r not allowed to giggle at them lol ;-)

they dont wear them no more. now the judge just wears their hair regular. a long time ago, when they wore wigs, it was fashionable or watever.

i think its the same reason priests wear what they wear and teachers used to wear that black cloak thing to sort or make you feel in awe and a bit nervous of them us lower class rabble might need that sort of thing to keep us in our place
