I have a baby leopard tortoise and today I noticed he had ants in his vivarium.I cleaned it all out but, I had no bedding left to use.As the pet shop was closed I used meadow hay for his bedding like I use for my guinea pigs.Does anyone know if this is harmful in any way?
What would you have used?

Hay is an OK short term solution, but very dry and not very good traction. Other short-term options include towels (NOT newspapers), or a chunk of indoor-outdoor carpet (always a nice option to have available when the main substrate is not available).

The key thing is to make sure the tortoise has access to a nice humid hiding space to minimize the risk of pyramiding.

Try http://www.tortoisetrust.com.uk for ideas on dealing with this beautiful, but really big when grown tortoise.

I used to use hay years ago when for my tortoise but I kept it out side. The tortoise I have now is in a Vivarium and I don't give her any bedding. I use a thick layer of sawdust ( not shavings) on the viv floor and she's got a plastic box in the corner which she sleeps in at night. Tortoise like darkness to make them feel more secure. Plastic is more hygienic as it can be washed easily in a baby sterilising fluid to reduce the risk of salmonella which you can get from tortoises, a wooden box absorbs the water and can rot when wet.

Im not sure about the hey, I put my totoise in the airing cupboard and forgot about it and it turned into cream of tortoise soup. It is now a pretty ash tray.
