On dec 19/2006 I hired a licensed contractor to remodel my kitchen with new granite. It is already March 26/2007 and he has not finished. Some of its done. My problem is that I thougth he was going to be honest and I paid him always with cash and I have paid him all the money he asked for.... He does not return my calls anymore and he has not finished the job.
WHAT DO I DO?

Hopefully you did not get scammed, but NEVER pay for services like that with cash because there is no way to prove that you paid if they do not give you a receipt. Checks and receipts provide you with documentation. If this contractor is from a particular company, take pictures of your work that has been completed and contact the company to see if you can rectify the situation. Hopefully there is a legitimate reason why he hasn't returned your calls (without him being dead, of course).

Rule of thumb is to NEVER pay a contractor until the job is complete, the most to give is 50% upfront for supplies. Having stated that, I only hope you have receipts. If he's an independent contractor, I'm afraid you did get scammed, but if he indeed is licensed, the least you can do is report him. Good luck

Never pay a contracter up front because you are walking away w.out a receipt. Best bet now is to call him and not scream in his machine. Tell him you would feel more comfortable if he would finish the job for you since he already started the work. Tell him it has not been easy on you living inside an unfinished house and to please call you back. You can pay him after the days work is through by the hour.
Chances are the bum needs more money and if you are clam will call you back. Next time get a receipt in writing w. his information on it so you can track him down easily.

File a complaint with the state contractors board. If he is a licensed contractor he is probably bonded and you can put an attachment on his bond. The Dept of Consumer affairs usually handles this in most states.
