I stopped my 1995 Jeep Cherokee today and put the car into park but the key would not come out of the ignition. It is stuck in the on position. (I can tap they key just enough to get the engine to turn off, but cannot get the ignition to turn to off or unlock.)

I can still start up the car and drive it around. If I push on the brake, I can shift in and out of park. I've tried wiggling the steering wheel, "firmly turning" the steering wheel, and moving in and out of park. I've tried starting it up and driving it around again. I've looked (unsuccessfully) for any ignition button under the steering wheel.

But I still cannot get the key out of the ignition!

this happens with my car.... what you do is even though the steering wheel is lockes try turning it back and forth while turning your key. that will get the ignition to release the key. :)

The cable that controls the lock is probably binding. Check under the steering column. Find that cable that leads from your ignition to the shift lever. Check if the cable is damaged. If not, try shifting the cable a bit to free up the cable. Then try moving the shift lever up down again. If you managed to free the bind then the key should unlock.

attempt pushing the shifter each and each of ways into park. If it would not seat each and each of ways, the swap received't sparkling to launch the ignition to rotate each and each of ways. If that would not get it, you should tug the middle console up and holiday the swap manually. it can be free on that is mount or damaged. On some fashions (no longer efficient about the neon) you may pull the guidance column conceal and there is slightly launch lever or button to override the shifter interlock. solid success and satisfied vacation trips.

I'd get that to a good Mechanic/Jeep Dealership soon. Ask family/friends if they know of any good shops you can go to.
You can't leave it like that if you park outside. Liable to not be there in the morning.
