If you have a cat you wouldn't have worry about the cat mess up your house because they do it in there liter box. But a dog is good for protection from thiefs and can be trained to don't mess up your house. So I will say a dog is better.

It depends on how much time you are willing to put in to training. If you are willing to train the dog properly, I would go with a dog (small to medium sized if it's going to be in the house most of the time). If you don't have the time to train, I would get a cat. The downside to a cat is the massive amount of shedding (though dogs shed too), but cats do not require as much attention or training.

I like cats much better, but I think the animals themselves also have a preference... I believe in 'cat people' and 'dog people'; I grew up hearing wonderful stories about the dogs my dad had when he was young, he'd owned them, knew how to handle them, taught me well so I didn't run up to them nor was I scared of them... however in spite of all that often dogs still didn't like me and would growl at me... on the other hand cats that according to the owners were really afraid of children or even all strangers would come up to me and end up on my lap.. I've had cats on my lap that rarely even sit on the lap of their owners! So sometimes it's their choice :-)

That depends: I prefer a dog, they go to the bathroom outside, you can give them a bath and they listen and respond to you. Cats are more of a prissy pet:you have to have a litter box, they climb on everything even as soon as they get out of the litter box, they leave hair everywhere and don't like baths. They listen and respond to you if they feel like it. This is my opinion, I have had both - I prefer in a big way, DOGS!

Depends on whether the owner is going to keep the animal and house clean, especially to keep down on allergens and pet hair.
I'd say a small dog who doesn't shed a lot, but that's because I wouldn't want to deal with the litter box.

cats are usually for people that don't like to go out a lot and like quiet animals. dogs are for people that are active.

Cat.
Cat's don't need to go outside for walkies many times a day in all weather. You can contain their litter to one small area. They don't get as bored or rambunctious. They don't need you to come home at noon to let them outside. They don't need training classes.
