I too am a Gretchen -- and I have always loved it. I constantly get compliments.
Unfortunately, Louise is my middle name - I hate that, named after my mom's friend.
I understand the Gretchen above that went to Germany and could not find anything with the name on it -- maybe because Gretchen is not a name, it is a nickname, like Pumpkin (pronounced GRAY KIN - roll the R). My parents had German friends when I was young and they explained it. It also means "Little Pearl".

Heck yeah! Gretchen is an AWESOME name given to AWESOME people! (Can you tell my name is Gretchen? LOL) My middle name is Ruth, but that's b/c I was named after my mom's favorite aunt. (Trust me, I'd rather have a different middle name, but I really didn't have much say in the matter at the time of my birth! LOL) I visited Germany about 6 yrs ago and tried to find something w/ my name on it, but my German friend informed me that it hasn't been used commonly over there for 100+ years! Oh well! I have found SOME things w/ my name on it, but only a few! (I buy them whenever I see them b/c I never know when the next time will be that I'll see something w/ my name.) BTW, I believe Miss America 1989 was also named Gretchen and her middle name was Elizabeth.

Hmm...not to fond of the name Gretchen. Just incase your child (when they are older) doesn't like it, try given her a middle name you can call her by.
Gretchen Marie
Gretchen Olivia
Gretchen May
