I have American Boxwood bushes to plant and they all come in 1 gallon black plastic bucket-like containers, do I plant them as they are in the containers or remove them first? Or does it matter?

If you leave bushes in black plastic containers, you must punch large holes in them for water and roots to get through. It is best to remove them from pots and use your hands or a tool to break apart the roots at the bottom and around the sides before planting. You don't need to be gentle when you loosen the roots but you need to do it so the plant will get a good start. Most plants will be a little root bound when you buy them.

Yes, you have to remove the bushes from their plastic containers or the roots will become pot bound. Some plants come in peat pots that will readily decay in the ground and they can be planted in the container.

Best practice is to remove any plant or bush from the container, roll a little on the ground to break up the dirt, even deliberately slightly damage the roots before putting in the ground. The damage will stimulate root growth.

Yes. You need to remove the plastic containers before planting.

Wait til after the last freeze and then remove the plastic before planting, otherwise the roots will not grow through the plastic and receive the proper nutrients from the soil.

You dig a hole, remove the plant from the container, roots and all, put in the hole, and fill the dirt back in. If you leave them in the containers, the roots have no place to grow.

Take the bush out of the bucket. And scrub the bucket down and use it to grow a container garden!

You should remove the containers first; otherwise, the roots will have no way to get to the soil outside the container.
