Kidney problems usually cause pain in the flanks (the outer sides of the lower back). This is what is commonly referred to as the costovertebral angle. Given the location of the pain, it could be a number of things. This could be a peptic ulcer, acid reflux, gallbladder pain or simply a gastroenteritis. What does the pain feel like? Burning? Sharp? Shooting? Does it radiate anywhere else? Does anything relieve the pain? Without theses details, it is really difficult to say what it may be, given that the area you describe contains several organs including the stomach, liver, spleen and gallbladder. It could also be muscle pain. You should see a physician for a proper diagnosis.

I was thinking incarcerated hernia. I think the pain is constant with a hernia, at least it was with my son until they removed the hernia. In any case go to the doctor. If it is a hernia the procedure is quick and easy and didn't seem to hurt too badly.
