Why do people automatically think that blacks get a welfare check?

I am african american and people of different races always think we get food stamps and welfare checks. Not true!! Why is this?

People automatically think young mothers do too.

Because they're ignorant. I get it all the time myself. My kid's doctor had a receptionist I got fired because she insulted me worse than I've ever been insulted in my life one day. I took my daughter in because her nose was running and she thought she'd closed the soundproof window thing to the waiting room but she hadn't.. she said

"Why do these medicaid mothers bring their kids in for every sniffle? To get out of work or because they don't have to pay for it?"

I walked back up to the window and told her I had private insurance and I brought my child to the doctor because she was sick and I would like to speak with her supervisor now.

I'm usually very nice, but I can get bitchy in a hurry.

I am a person of a different race, and I don't assume that you receive welfare checks from the government. Please don't ASSUME that people of different races ALWAYS do anything. It's a very uninformed position to take. Although there are a LOT of people that think that African Americans are worse off than most of the free world, you and I know that it is not true. I myself at one point received help from the government, and I am Caucasian. So, don't fret over the little things, because anyone who would speak before they are informed about your race or anyone elses race, is ignorant and not to mention arrogant to think they know everything. So don't be drawn down to their level and assume that everyone feels that way. I don't.

Not all people make such broad generalizations. A lot of black people are very hard working citizens. A lot of whites and hispanics receive welfare, too. Basically, you can blame Hollywood for this. Also, the ghettos, much like the trailer parks, are full of scum bags.

I think when people see a young lady, say under 25, with 4 or 5 kids under her belt, one tends to wonder how she is able to care for all of them.
But this also applies to white females as well, especially in areas where there is little work and a high poverty level.

I am hispanic"Mexican" if you want to call it, but not all people think like that. It's funny that you mention this, but on Saturday I went to a grocery store and when I was about to pay, I took my wallet out of my purse and the cashier asked,"will you be paying with food stamps?" She was also a mexican. I sighed and said, Uh....NO, CASH!!!!

not everyone thinks that. i guess alot of people think that because alot of them do receive those benefits. i know this because several people who work at social services come into my loan office and have mentioned that - black and hispanic are the majority of benefit getter's. but,not everyone thinks that being black is a stereotype of a welfare bum. also - alot of black comedies poke fun at that,maybe some people take the humor the wrong way and make it bad.also in music,such as bone thugs and harmonys "1st of tha month" it's referenced.but,trust me - alot of whites are in the system too,i see them at my job as well.

I hear ya honey...I've seen many different races at the grocery store with 20 shopping carts full of crap paying with food stamps and me and my little hand basket and my list wanting to cry because I have to deal with the paycheck I bust my a*ss to make!!

It would be,at least partially, your job do dispel that kind of stereotyping. If everyone in every race took a little responsibility to be better than that...it would end.
