The alternative would have to be a phrase rather than a single word, because THIS is not a noun. Example:
This matter is important. The matter in question ( in hand ) is important.
This is urgent. What I said is important.

When I studied English grammar years ago, we were forbidden to use "this". Not because it was wrong, but because it tended to make us write better. It was good training.
I nearly always found that "that" fitted just as well, and it reads better, too. Try it!
