Yes, AVG Free is the best anti-virus out there right now and is compatible with Windows 98. Norton is total junk, uses up a lot of system resources and you have to pay for it. Avast is another free anti-virus, which is still good, but personally I like AVG. You can download AVG from the link below. There is absolutely no spyware.

Some of the free antivirus software pacakges are compatible, but your friend may find herself in over her head when a problem arises. Choose carefully. Avast is probably the best free one, and it seems to have a good track record.

The real problem that your friend has is the '98 machine itself. Aside from the hardware now being of an age that puts it at risk for failure, that operating system is nearly 10 years old, and out of even extended support from Microsoft. Perhaps she would be better served to find a way to make those same connections on a newer machine that runs a safer OS?

Quite a few, a good scanner that supports W98 is NOD32, which you can find at http://www.eset.com/products/win9x.php AVG is mentioned a lot, and it is better than nothing, but not the most impressive scanner around. Avast is another, but reported to slow the computer down more since the last update.

Norton isn't what I would recommend, if you want to pay, NOD32, if you don't, check this link:

AOL's offering might be something for you, Kaspersky make a top notch scanner.

confident there is, yet you do no longer truthfully would desire to pay for an anti-virus. For one element, Microsoft's anti-virus engine (attainable as Microsoft risk-free practices necessities for older variations of residing house windows) is integrated so which you have already got an entire anti-virus answer for loose. for yet another, there are countless loose third social gathering AV engines accessible, like Avast and AVG.
