It's good work if jobs are available. Some assignments can last one week, others for more than 6 months. Theoretically once you're signed to an agency, you could work for several different employers during a few months.
The great part is that you get to sample a variety of occupations. Another good part is that if you have an ogre for a boss, that you're not stuck with him/her for too long a time (smile). Try your State's Personnel Dept. for temporary positions.
The down side is that once an assignment ends, that there may not be another position available when you are.

Many large companies prefer hiring temps, even for long term assignments. This is so they don't have to go through the hiring process and pay benefits. If they find really high caliber employees they can then hire them full time after the "test drive".
Depending on the company and the agency, there are lots of excellent opportunities through agencies. I worked for one in Upstate NY for 6 months. Got hired full time by the company and worked there another 14 years.
I took another long term "temp" job last May. I also got hired full time by the company in Nov. and hopefully can do another 14 or 15 years here.
This company has about 200 "contract employees" in a building of about 700 people. Many have been here over 3 years and are pretty happy. Most would like to be hired full time, but this particular company has pretty excellent benefits so they find it much easier to use "contract employees". It's actually quite difficult to get permission to hire full time. I was in the right place at the right time. Someone got promoted and I applied for their job. I had the right background and was somewhat lucky too.
Go for it, you never know what might happen.

A whole lot depends on your location. If you are in a busy city, you will have a better chance of being hired for temporary assignements.
Although you will have competition from other students thinking the same thing, more people go on vacation during the summer, so there are more assignments available.
I suggest you research the job market in your area and contact temporary agencies and ask what their hiring opportunities are like. Although, their answers may be a little over-optomistic, if they are at all negative (e.g., "we can place most people in a month or two," etc.), it will give you an idea what your options are like.

If you're planning on having it strictly as a temporary summer job, temp work can't be beat. But if you plan on working when you go to school, it could prove problematic; some places seem to think that if the job is between 35-38 hours a week, it's not full-time, and that could cost you. But the office experience is a definite plus, though.
