Cairns up the Far North is the best in my opinion if you like diving, want to see the Great barrier Reef, world heritage rainforest. This is my hometown so I'm kinda biased.

Brisbane is cool - kind of reminds me of San Diego.

Sunshine Coast QLD is gorgeous and much better than Gold Coast (BrisVegas) for natural coastal beauty.

You can go to www.virginblue.com.au , www.travel.com.au or www.qantas.com.au to find airfare prices between Australian cities.

Also, my sister loved Perth but it is way over on the west coast so you'd have to have a reasonably good budget to incorporate that too. If you are budget restricted, do Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane (and rent a car up to drive up to the Sunshine coast), and fly up to Cairns. You could also look into rail travel up the east coast of Australia - go to www.qr.com.au to save money on flights etc

Best website is www.flightcentre.com - they boast the cheapest flights around Australia and internationally.
I live in Canberra, (A.C.T - Australian Capital Territory) it's a relatively quiet place to visit if you do visit Oz! It is close to the eastern sea board and places like Batemans bay, Ulladulla, Narooma, Newcastle, Wollongong and Sydney are all really pretty, inexpensive coastal towns that have heaps to do and see. It would be worth your while to consider renting a car and even driving, as all these places are within a couple hours drive from each other. There's a tourism centre in each city here, so check them out when you get down here. It's easier to go there in person than do it on line, as times and dates and weekends can make a huge difference to things and activities are on. I would recommend spring/summer (September to February.)
Most people make the trip up to the Gold coast (Queensland) where you can see the great Barrier Reef. The flights are also fairly cheap anywhere out of Sydney to anywhere in Australia.

Also check out sites like:

www.tripadvisor.com

www.tourism.australia.com

www.canberratourism.com.au

Hope this helped!
