no. the shaft is fine. your problem is in the electrical or in the fuel delivery system. ELECTRICAL.......spark plugs, plug wires,distributer,powercoil------- FUEL DELIVERY....fuel pump, fuel regulator, fuel filter.

Sounds like a timing belt,Sunbirds are noted for having a bad timing belt after they get some miles on them.

Does the crank turn? Sounds more like an ignition problem. Is the timing belt in proper position? If you have an inductive timing light, place it on any plug wire to see if there is ignition. Best of luck! ;-)=

have you checked the gas tank? when was the last tune done on it? check the spark plugs? check the oil. Is there any water in the oil? it will look milky if there is. its more likely that its not getting fuel or spark, rather than the crankshaft being broken.

If the car cranks but won't start that usually means it's not getting fuel, spark, or the timing belt/chain is snapped.

absolutely - if it cranks but does not start it is always the crankshaft. You could also check the smith struts with a Left handed crescent wrench when you install the new one.
