I have a 2000 Honda Civic Ex Sedan with automatic transmission and I was cruising on the hwy going about 80mph when I accidently slipped my gear into REVERSE!! It made a horrible noise, so I pulled over...turned the car off...put the transmission in neutral and restarted the engine. The next morning, I couldn't put my car in reverse!! It was making the same horrible noise!! What should I do? Is my transmission messed up?

By what you describe, I'm sorry to say, but YES the transmission will need to be replaced. In this situation, you are better off sourcing out a good used transmission from a salvage yard. A new or rebuilt transmission WILL NOT be cheap. Since these cars are 'a dime, a dozen', you shouldn't encounter difficulty locating a good used unit. Be careful next time.

If it's still under warranty I would have it towed to a dealership for repair. It's almost impossible for them to say it's your fault. Automatic transmissions have a way of self destructing when anything comes loose as they're highly pressurized and very complicated.

Most cars have a ratchet gear to keep that from happening, but going 80mph might be more than that ratchet gear could handle which would mean it's broken and bouncing around inside the trans. You're most likely going to need either a rebuild or a new transmission. I hope, for your sake, that I'm wrong.

Sorry but yes it is. There is a band that gets applied for the reverse gear to be engaged. (Don't want to get to technical about what the band does as it would require a lengthy explanation about how a planetary gear set-up works in a Simpson gear train) Hopefully it is the only thing that is broken, but it will require repairs.

u have stripped out ur reverse gears inside ur trany. it will have to be rebuilt. that will cost u a pretty penny though,. it might be better to go to a salvage yard and find one with low milage.

I would say so. I hope your vehicle is still under warranty, transmission work is probably the most expensive type of repair next to engines.

yeah, your reverse is mushed. a lot of newer cars have a "guard" to keep you from making this very expensive mistake. hold onto your wallet, civic trannies are not cheap...
