"How much is too much calcium? Around 1,500 milligrams (mg) per day is all your body really needs, if you are at high risk for osteoporosis. Getting as much as 2,200 mg has been shown to be relatively safe. The safe upper limit for calcium is 2,500 mg per day."

I have to say I'm amazed at some of the ignorant answers! Like the person above me! She never said she was drinking too much milk or taking calcium suppliments! Sheesh people! It's an honest to good question!

Occasionally, too much calcium enters the blood, most often as a result of cancer that has spread to the bones. An overproduction of PTH may also responsible; this is often caused by a tumour in one or more of the parathyroid glands.

Excess production of PTH may occur to compensate for a malfunction in one of the body's other calcium-balancing mechanisms, for example, when the kidneys aren't working properly or when there's a deficiency of vitamin D.

Too much calcium in the blood may cause:

abdominal pain
nausea and vomiting
constipation
loss of appetite
excessive thirst
excessive passing of water
tiredness
weakness
weight loss

Hypercalcaemia can also cause more serious problems such as depression, dehydration, bone fractures, kidney stones and sudden heart attacks.

Treatment depends on how high the levels of calcium are, symptoms and suspected underlying cause. Sometimes no treatment is necessary; at other times, intravenous drugs will be given to lower the calcium levels. Surgery may also be needed to remove the parathyroid glands if they're the source of the problem.

It's difficult to specify how much too much is because it's different for everybody, if you're worried, go and see your doctor.

once again, people obsessed with exact amounts for nutrient/carbs/calories/etc. Obviously you're taking calcium supplements (if you're asking because you think you're drinking too much milk, thats just odd). Here's an idea, stop taking supplements & get your vitamins/minerals where you're supposed to--------- your FOOD. Eat properly. Pretty simple. People have been doing it for thousands of years. We never needed supplements before.

Anything above the daily recommended dosage. It would take a lot before it became dangerous. Don't like...eat calcium.

You probably need about 1000 - 1200 mg per day. but not all at one time. Your body can only absorb about 600 mg at one time. So if you take more you are just wasting it.

When you begin to grow an outside shell. I'm sorry, I couldn't resist. Something I should be doing but don't. Maybe I'll learn too.
