The South was primarily an agricultural based society whereas the North was an industrial based society.

The North won the war by basically out producing the South. The South had no munitions factories, no way to make weapons, ships or other goods. The South depended on exporting their goods (primarily cotton and other agricultural products) to the North and the rest of the world.

When the war started, the South lost the ability to grow crops because the landowners joined the cause. The slaves stopped working the land and the North slowly strangled the South blockages for the few goods they could produce. The South had no way to export their goods, no way to make money, no way to purchase guns and munitions for the war and thus, no way to win.

In the North, the factories still ran and the North had money, guns, ships, ammo and food. The South had none.

The North basically won the war from an economic standpoint - the battles were just part of the war.

The North had the manufacturing base and the food supply. They had most of the U.S. Navy. They could sustain armies for a long time that were well-supplied. The North lacked in military leadership, however. The South dominated the military leadership on land b/c they practically owned the officers training colleges in the U.S. (there were all political Democrats in the officer corps, it had been 'arranged' that way). The Southern economy was based on cotton - can't do much in war with cotton when the Navy is blocking you in a quarantine line blocking trade! Although the South had early victories on the Potomac, Gen. Robert E. Lee was a little too daring for his own good: he decided to invade the north at Gettysburg. Most people say RE Lees biggest asset was his daring; I think it is his biggest fault. If he had stayed in the South and kept winning victories against the invading North, which it seemed he was good at, the South might have won. By invading the north, he hoped to live off the land, but then again, he was in enemy territory. Also, around the same time Gettysburg was wrapping up, Gen. U.S. Grant won at Vicksburg, MS, which meant the U.S. Navy had access to the Mississippi River, which brought about the splitting of the Confederacy into two!! After Gettysburg and Vicksburg, it is downhill from there for the South. The South couldnt get trade in, and as a result the North simply wore them down (in the military, this phenomenon is called attrition)

DISADVANTAGES OF THE SOUTh

less troops
Less supplies
