There is such a list - and it includes a variety of books from classical to contemporary - that should be read. There are other complimentary lists of British books to be read, poetry, etc. Thanks!

Great question. I don't know the answer but I will research and post my findings. Please do the same as I am interested as well.

Here are my findings:
http://www.amazon.com/Books-before-college-while-still/lm/R5DZGK9HBVFGI
http://www.collegeconfidential.com/cgi-bin/discus/show.cgi?99/12497
http://www.grimes.lib.ia.us/classics.htm
http://cmcweb.lr.k12.nj.us/library/subjects/book.htm

As far as a nationally recommended reading list, I couldn't find one. I even checked out the U.S. Department of Education, and nothing. The lists above may not be nationally recommended but they seem to contain good literature that I can't dispute the importance of reading.
