Generally....

Kill all the weeds and debris. Wait a few weeks.

In the meantine, remove all the stones, rocks, etc. After the weed killer has had time to leach out from the soil, add new topsoil to the lawn. About 2-3 inches. Make sure you level it carefully and check your drainage away from the house and other features of your home. Make sure you have a good compaction, but not solid.

Then lay your sod and compact it down with a roller. Water it daily for two weeks until it has caught hold of the soil. Do not mow it for about 2 weeks. Good luck

Hey...if you have bare dirt, you are already a step ahead! Most people have to start by removing the weeds. So you need to begin with adding something healthy to your soil.

The most important part of establishing a lawn is soil preparation. If you have access to a rototiller, that would be great. Otherwise, dig in with a shovel. You need to add compost or some type of healthy topsoil, most likely. Then, seed, sod, sprig, plug? Which do you prefer? What will your finances allow? How much time do you have, and how much time do you want to spend on it? Also, how long do you want to wait to see results?
