There are several ways to do it: you can let the washing machine fill up with water, add the detergent then put the clothes in.
[Make sure you put the clothes (whites, lights, and darks separated into piles) in a balancing formation (put them in one at a time unless your washing small items in a circular pattern around the middle and DON'T OVERFILL YOUR WASHING MACHINE!]
Or you can turn the machine on letting it begin to fill up with water putting the clothes in [make sure you let them get engulfed in water before putting the soap on] and then putting the soap in, in a circular fashion (as you did with the clothes).
You can also just pour the detergent in at one time if you'd like, using the previous method.
Whatever your preference is! :)

I put my detergent in all at once before the washer starts to fill with water. After there are about five inches of water, I start putting the clothes in.
I never use as much detergent as the packaging suggests. Since the manufacturers want you to buy lots of detergent, I generally assume they tell you to use to much. Depending on how dirty the clothes are, I use between 1/2 and 3/4 of the recommended amount, and everything always comes out clean.

My washer has a seperate compartment for the detergent but if you dont have one then you should fill up the washer with water, add the detergent, then put in the clothes. Do this especially if you use powder detergent.

Folks I've been doing laundry since before they had automatic washers. Started with the old ringer models. and I've never gone to all the trouble you do here and I've NEVER had a problem. I load the clothes, start the mackine, pour in the detergent, close the lid and come back when it's done. There's really no big deal to it. Sheesh, you make it sound like it's some sacrosanct ritual that has to be done step by step or it'll ruin the clothes or something. It ain't rocket science.

The same as the other three answers, however, make sure you measure the detergent according to the bottle/box directions and according to the size of your load. For example if it says to put in one capful and you are only washing 3 or 4 items, don't put in a full capful. If you have clother that are stained or spotted, pour your capful of detergent and put some of it directly on the stain. Rub it in and use the remainder in your machine.

I dump it in while I'm running water into the washer. Maybe I stir it a little to dissolve it. After that, I add the clothes.
