As you indicated "to help yourself" it generally might be the right thing to do if it doesn't affect others.

Sometimes a person can "care" too much and find there was no need for it.

No. You keep pushing it back it will come out in many ways, usually ways that arent healthy for you...depending on that problem. It's best to face it somehow, talk it out, go to a therapist, whatever. Take it from someone who knows,

It is not right to tell yourself that you don't care when you do.
Face the fact that you do care and then tell yourself to forget about it.

It's not 'wrong', but just isn't a good idea. I've tried it before, and it doesn't help, and, in most cases, for me, it caused damage.
