I have a PS3. I played it in standard format until I bought the HDMI cable a few days later. I have a 1080p TV, though the game I was playing topped out at 720p, anyway, I could tell a difference between the standard and HD resolutions after playing both for a while. The HD is more sharp and offers a lot more little details that you wouldn't really notice, or particularly miss, in standard, such as individual raindrops. That being said, if you do not have an HD TV then it will be like playing a PS2 for the most part. The real problem with the PS3 is the incredible lack of quality games availaible.
I like the desgn the PS3 system, and I love how quiet it runs, but as far as graphics I think it is equal to the 360, at least at the moment, but the 360 is cheaper (though not if you add the HDDVD player, but it's nice that you get the choice) and it alredy has a nice selection of good games, some seem destined to be ported to the PS3 (Oblivion, Ninja Gaiden-the xbox version).
Anyway, all that being said it doesn't benefit you to be unimpressed by a single observation. Unless you are just complaining to complain, which serves no purpose. If you were thinking of buying one or choosing between it and the 360 then do some research and actually check them out. I would probably recommend the 360 at this point in time, but I have never seen a demo running in a store that impressed me, not for any system, it's just not the same as actually becoming familiar with a system.

I was a die-hard playstation fan, I am now a proud owner of an X box 360 and am very impressed. The graphics on the ps3 are no better than the 360 and the lack of games for the ps3 is unbelievable. Yes the ps3 will have more games soon, but the 360 still hasnt reached its full potential with games like halo 3 and assassins creed being released soon. Yes the ps3 has blu ray, which it states is cheap for the price but one has to realise that once the fight between consoles has died down, you will be able to buy a blu ray or hd dvd for a lot less, look at dvd recorders! Blu ray and hd dvd are only just coming forward so in about a year, both will have improved and have many more facilities which are not available now, by then you will be wishing you had waited. I won't be buying a hd dvd anytime soon untill the craze has passed and the prices settle down. X Box 360 for me everytime!

Well, in most cases the graphics are a lot more photorealistic, although some Ps2 games do have better graphics than some Ps3 games. I, personally, am not very impressed by the Ps3 for different reasons. These include the fact that Sony marketed it wrong, it had underwhelming sales, it was 600 FREAKING DOLLARS, among others. So don't be unimpressed by the graphics, be unimpressed by these many other reasons.

I wouldn't make a strong judgement based on one demo. That said, I am not really interested in the PS3. I don't want my video games to be more realistic. If I wanted real life, I'd join the army. And I certainly don't want them to be more expensive. I'm happy with my computer and my PS2. I have a life outside of video games, so they'll keep me busy pretty much for the next decade or so.

There is a ton of difference. Ive heard that HMV has Standard TV displays though, which serve the PS3 no justice.

I'm happy with my PS2, and I hope that some games still get made for PS2.
