The King becomes King immediately upon the death of the previous monarch. He is officially proclaimed so within a few days. The coronation is simply a ceremony to set the seal upon his reign. He is anointed, takes the oath, is crowned and receives homage from the Archbishop of Canterbury and the royal dukes.
Edward VIII was never crowned, abdicating five months before the date set for his coronation. He was nevertheless King during the months following the death of George V and his abdication. Had he not been so, there would have been no need to abdicate!
