I want to purchase a Coach leather handbag as a gift for my friend who lives in Iowa. Will the leather crack and ruin the bag in the winter when it gets cold? If so can this be prevented by conditioning the leather throughout the year?
Or would it be better to get a fabric bag with leather trim?

Go with leather. Coach leathers are really good. The fabric bags get dirty easily so you have to be more careful (I have a couple Coach ones). The leather conditioner is a good idea to use anyway, but it's the cheap vinyl/PVC "pleather" that cracks in the winter. I live in Canada and I haven't had any problems with quality leather.

vinyl is more likely to crack and look bad than is leather...
think about it...leather is made from cowhide (most commonly)...and when was the last time you saw a cow with cracked skin?
in addition, you can ask the sales person at the COACH store for advice on how to care for the bag, and how to treat it so that it is ready for winter

no, leather is skin/ hid it can get water damage and other stains but not crack from the cold. ie think about the leather coats you wear in the winter time.

um. coach. in case you didnt understand.. which im assuming you didnt, coach purses arent all monogrammed. gosh. :D their Legacy Thompson, Legacy, coach Ergo, Hanmptons, and Chelsea all have lovable prevalent leather-based ones.
