do we have to remove the stones first, and then lay down the topsoil, or can we just buy topsoil to cover the stones and then plant the grass? Thanks!

I would remove them. The ground needs to be roto-tilled before seeding besides not good for the grass not good for the tiller. Grass takes more work than just throwing down some seed. You need to prep the soil first.

You really should remove all the stone and lay down a level new bed of topsoil first. If you cover the stones you will have alot of trouble with settling and stones rising to the top.

Remove the stones, level the ground with 2 inches of new topsoil, and then lay down new sod.

The stones must be removed. Grass, like any other plant, needs good soil to grow in...and landscaping stones don't really fall into that category...

You have to remove the stones. Growing grass is not as easy as it sounds. Where do you live? If you live in a Western State then it is going to be really hard to grow grass without an in ground watering system.

Take the stones out. They will interfere with the penetration of the grass's roots and will interfere with their ability to take up water if it gets dry...

It would be better and last longer if you remove the stones.

well, you might want to talk to a local landscaper about this, because sometimes stones can be beneficial for drainage, but if its too dry then your grass might not grow.
