I am an actual poet (with published books) and I can say that there are many good poem topics. I personally like to write many different types, because I explore many different subjects. Some good examples are a construction site, a person who you don't know but could make up their life, a poem about poetry, or one about something that is close to you. The poem topic varies on the poet, so these may or may not work for you. Expirement! In the words of H.L. Mencken, "There are no dull subjects, only dull writers." So just use your imagination.

Poetry IS imagery.

Poetry also includes emotion. Emotion and the willingness to experience it and put it into your work is what lets the poet write beyond the pale and average level of prose.

Most poetry is written for the poet, first, and then it may be shared.

It really does not matter what the topic may be. Choose what appeals to you, something that you have an emotional contact with.

Look inside yourself for additional connection to the subject.
Try to visualize these connections, whether in word or picture form, then let your imagination free to fit words together and around the image you create in your mind.

Remember the words above: poetry is for the poet, first.

If you are pleased with your work, then it really is true that the opinion of others has little meaning.
