Harmonica is a German folk instrument. It made its way to the states with the first immigrants in the colonies and became a part of American folk music culture. Also called a "harp" or "mouth harp."
It is commonly associated with most forms of American folk music (bluegrass, blues, rhythm & blues, country & western, folk). Due to its mass popularity, it eventually trickled down into modern day pop music, rock n roll, jazz, and even punk music.

As a professional harp player, I've played in just about every genre of music possible. Gospel, the music mentioned above, even classical music.

Like any other instrument, you can play it in any kind of music you want.

As for me, I personally love playing blues.

All the genres that have been listed - plus classical. There are some really neat harmonica concertos out there by such composers as Heitor Villa-Lobos (Brazilian), Tossy Spivakovsky (Russian), Sir Malcolm Arnold (English) and Henry Cowell (American).
There are numerous arrangements of everything else for the instrument, including classical and pop of all kinds.

Search for albums by Larry Adler and Tommy Reilly to locate these.

Any genre you want. There are no rules when it comes to music. Creativity is a wonderful thing in music. Don't try to put music in a box.
