I owe about 6,000 dollars in rearrages from a child I knew nothing about. I have a limited budget when it comes to finances. Is getting a lawyer more important before I pay this down or is paying this down more important...I can only do one or the other at this time.

If the child has been proven to be your child (paternity testing) call the child support agency and work on a payment plan. If a paternity test hasn't been given, get that done first and proof the child is yours before you start paying.

See an attorney first. You can get a free consultation and find out all the different factors you need to consider. An attorney can be helpful for a multitude of reasons, not the least of which is negotiating a payment plan if in fact you owe $6,000 (which you might not if the attorney can argue otherwise).

But no matter what I think you should get legal advice and representation because you need to make a contract/agreement between you and the mother regarding everything from visitation rights to who pays for college. This $6,000 could be just the beginning of the demands from the mother. You need to get it all in writing now.

I assume that a DNA test has been done to prove you are the father. If this is the case then I would just start paying the child support. You can consult a family attorney. Most of the time they will give you a free consultation.
