I can't remember where it is mounted on the 500 but here is the rule in general on Kawasaki bikes.

On switches mounted on the top triple clamp you remove the headlight shell, remove the wiring cover (some have this and some don't) and then remove the switch. Most of the new switches are held in with tamper proof screws. You can buy the correct driver from most auto parts stores or get them at Harbor Freight.

For side mounted switches you remove the cover and then the tamper proof screws.

Make sure you get a good bite on the screws. They are really torqued in there. If you round off the head you are in for a world of fun.
