Henry VIII sought a divorce from his wife Katherine of Arragon so he could marry his mistress Ann Boleyn. The Pope refused to grant him a divorce because it was against Catholic teaching and beliefs, Therefore Henry broke from Rome and set himself up as head of the church creating a situation of no separation of church and state. He headed the Anglican church and had beheaded hundreds of clergy who would not swear allegiance ti him. That was when England became a protestant state.

The king of England, Henry the VIII, wanted to divorce his wife, but the Roman Catholic Church would not let him. So he set up the Church of England to do so. Also after words he made the country Protestant and made all people be protestant or else. All because a guy hated his wife.

Basic outline more to give you an idea of what to look into the details of than to fully answer your question (sorry, just getting tired of doing people's homework for them on here in the vain hopes of helping people who are actually just interested in history).
Henry 8th's father had assumed power after the Wars of the Roses, so Henry 8th was very nervous his family would be overthrown again. He demanded a male heir for this reason.
Catherine of Aragon was his first wife, but she only produced a daughter (and some children that died) for him. He was with Anne Boylnn on the side, so he tried to annul his marriage Catherine and marry Anne. Unfortunately Catherine was related to the Holy Roman Emporer, who basically controlled the pope at the time, so the church did not allow it. The Catholics did this regularly, especially for royalty. The only reason it was not done is because of who the woman in question was related to.
England split from the church, Henry got the pope's powers, but did not go overboard with becoming Protestant, just with making sure people were swearing loyalty to him (again because of his fear of being overthrown more than anything).
Henry's son Edward assumed the crown after his death, because he was a child, his advisors were the real rulers. One of them pushed for making the country more and more protestant.
Edward died, Mary became Queen-Catholics controlled England again, religious persecution abounds (not at all abnormal for the time period anyway). Mary dies, replaced by Elizabeth. Elizabeth dies, ending the Tudor line to be replaced by the Catholic Stuart line of monarchs. The ones that get to stay in power (2 of 4) allow England to be protestant. William and Mary of Orange take over as true protestant monarchs eventually.

Most of the earlier answers are correct except for one major point, Henry NEVER gave up his catholicism and died a catholic. England became protestant when Henry's' only legitimate heir, Edward, became king. Edward Vl was England's first protestant king.

Henry the 8th decided that he wanted to divorce his first wife, Katherine, so he broke with the Pope and declared himself the head of the Church of England. He divorced Katherine and married Ann Boelyn, with whom he had Elizabeth I. After Henry's death, his first daughter, Mary, tried to bring Catholicism back to England, but her reign was short and bloody. When Elizabeth assumed the throne, she restored Protestantism and England has been Protestant since.

Henry VIII was married to Catherine of Aragon (she had been his brother's widow and Henry was married to her to continue the English alliance with Aragon). Catherine could not give Henry a male heir (they had one daughter, Mary). Henry was a womanizer and he had illegitimate children and sons but he had no formal male heir. He was totally blown away over Anne Boleyn, who knew how to spin him. He wanted to divorce Catherine and marry Anne but the Pope would not approve an annulment of the married (divorce was impossible). So, Henry split with the Catholic Church and the Pope and created his own church, Church of England, whereby Henry was the King and Head of the Church. Then Henry approved his divorce to Catherine and married Anne Boleyn but when Anne only produced a female child (Elizabeth) Henry had charges of adultery put on Anne and beheaded her so he could marry Jane Seymour (who did have a male child)

When Henry VIII divorced his wife, he wanted it to be justified and not counted against him, so he twisted the Catholic belifs around to form another form of Christianity. At first, this was thought of as sort of a barbaric religion, then under Queen Elizabeth, it became more widespread and eventually became the religion of England under King James. (the King James Bible-1611)

King Henry VIII wanted to divorce his wife, Catherine of Aragon, and marry Anne Boleyn. The Church didn't like this idea, but Henry didn't care, so he decided he would make himself the head of the English church and make his own decisions.
