I never saw one of these types of fans until I
saw them in movies in the last few years..
The house I grew up in had a ceiling fan
installed directly into the ceiling instead
of hanging from the ceiling. It was 60" in diameter. We would run it in one direction in the summer and
the fan blew air through the house and out the
windows. Or instead, turn the fan off
when it got cool outside, then make
the fan pull air into the house from the
outside. When not in use, the fan has panels
that close.

I'm a fan freak, and I was mad because they
got central air. I liked the sound of the fan.

Sounds like you're talking about an attic fan. We used to have one. Thinking about putting one in our new house too.

Yes, an attic fan is great. We had both an attic fan and central air in one of our houses. Didn't have to use the central air too often - that fan worked very well. The only time it caused a problem was once wahen I ran it with the flapper in the fireplace open and hadn't cleaned out the fireplace. Soot and ashes all over! What a mess!

We have one. It's called an attic fan. There are two types. One they just install up in the attic and it keeps the hot air out. The other is actually installed in the hallway or a back room and is vented directly outside. They may have several names but ours was called a vented houseand attic fan. It could be set to blow either direction. They were common in the fifties.

Attic Fans at your local Home and Lumber stores. Call around to Jerry's Home Building and Lumber, Home Depot, or Lowe's. You can also check on-line at each place listed too.

Haven't heard of one of those in an age. I believe they called them whole house fans. They went by the wayside when AC became available for a resonable cost.
