I applied last Thursday and was told that I would be called regardless. It's Monday and I'm thinking of calling them to follow up and check how things are going. Is it good to follow up? Is a phone call good or would you prefer e-mail or an in person?

I just handed in my resume and now I'm waiting for an interview. I think when they said they would call me regardless, I think they meant for an interview.

There really is no right answer for this, because on one hand, if you call to follow up, it shows initiative and proves that you're self-motivated. On the other hand, it can cause a nuisance if the HR dept is busy and/or they haven't decided if you're right for the position. Personally, I'd wait a couple more days. Think of it this way, in the corporate world, Fridays are golf days. So if you applied on Thursday, they probably haven't even looked at your application yet. I'd give it a good week before I followed-up. And FYI in the future, ALWAYS get the name of someone, perhaps the person who accepted your application, so that when you call, you're not asking for "someone in HR." On top of that, people feel a sense of responsibility when they give up their name, so it can't hurt.
As far as your final question, I would say start out with a phone call, if you've left messages then go in person. Never email because the greatest thing about email is that you can choose to ignore it.

If they hired you they will contact you. They will find it annoying that you would "follow up".
You've heard the saying, "our people will call your people".
Just sit and wait, you'll hear from them if you got the job.
