I remember seeing it when I was younger. It came out in the 70's. It is about some type of a nuclear holocost that wiped out human population except for a group of people that survived because they'd happen to be exploring caves during the explosion. When they came out of the cave they could see where the people were vaporized because they're ashes were left in an outline of they're body when they were vaporized. Does this movie ring a bell for anyone?

*** new entry ***
i was thinking 'the andromeda strain' but, no holocaust, and the bodies were not dust, but their blood was. this was circa 1971. still not the one but maybe this will jar someone's memory
night of the comet was an 80's movie. not that one, plus no caves. they were at the movie plex. the day after is 80s as well. thought it might be one called 'the time machine' (link included), but i don't recall it being the aftermath of a holocaust. just remember the humans were above ground and the morlocks were underground. doubt this is your movie, sorry

sounds like the "Day After" great movie
"Night of the Comet" is about people who were in buildings and rooms made of metal (movie theater and a trailer off a big truck)

Plot summary for
The Day After (1983) (TV)
advertisement The frightening story of the weeks leading up to and following a nuclear strike on the United States. The bulk of the activity centers around the town of Lawrence, Kansas. Written by Anthony Ventarola {theventman@aol.com}
It is the mid-1980s. An aggressive Soviet leadership orders troops marched to the border of West Berlin, and then decides to invade West Germany with multiple armored tank & troop divisions. In Lawrence, Kansas - on the border with Missouri - a family is preparing for the wedding of their eldest daughter, and Dr. Oakes (Jason Robards) is keeping busy in his role as chief of surgery in the small University Hospital at Lawrence. These people go on with their daily lives but are drawn closer to the possibility of a nuclear war, as the Russians use a nuclear ballistic missile against a West German city, and then attack a U.S. warship in the Persian Gulf. The Americans strike back by hitting a Soviet ship, and then the Russians hit NATO regional headquarters with a nuclear warhead! People start creating makeshift fallout shelters in their basements, but many are caught off guard when, 1 at a time, nuclear missiles are launched from their silos along the Kansas - Missouri border. USAF officers then announce that 300+ ICBMs are inbound to the U.S., and 2 of them strike Kansas City, Missouri! Many are killed outright, but still more must face the danger of radioactive fallout. Now, the characters we follow are living in a barren, devastated world - devoid of electricity, safe drinking water, and food - and filled with radioactivity, starvation, and disease...in the horrific aftermath of 'The Day After'... Plot summary for
Night of the Comet (1984)
advertisement Two pretty high school girls (one a cheerleader!) don't like their mother or her new boyfriend ("Daddy would have gotten us Uzis!"). One morning, they wake up to find that everybody in Los Angeles has been turned to dust by a Comet except them, a guy who looks like Erik Estrada, some zombies and the occupants of a secret underground government installation. Written by Mark Logan {marklo@west.sun.com}
Two girls from the Valley wake up to find that a passing comet has eradicated their world and left behind a mysterious red-dust and a pack of cannibal mutants. With the help of a friendly truck driver, the girls save the earth from a villainous "think tank," karate chop their way through flesh-eating zombies, and, of course, find time to go to the mall. Written by Jaime Kidwell
Two sisters, high school seniors in the early 1980s, awaken one morning to blood red skies and the realization that the human race has been wiped out. It becomes apparant that anyone who was not surrounded by steel when the Earth recently passed through the tail of Haley's comet has been reduced to a pile of red ash (the trace elements of human chemical makeup.) They encounter a rebellious Native American man and take over the air waves at a local radio station in an attempt to get help. Unfortunately, they attract the attention of a group of scientists who knew what the effects of the comet would be. They hid underground in a steel laboratory, but idiotically left the vents open. Now, as various survivors of the comet who were only partially surrounded by steel are decaying into flesh-hungry zombies, the scientists are attempting to come up with a vaccine made of the blood of people who were not infected by the comet. Thus the trio must fight their way past not only roving packs of the cannibalistic dead, but also outsmart a pack of scientists desperate not to become that way themselves. Written by Easter Bradford

It's definitely "The Night of the Comet". Or "The Goonies". They both have similar plotlines.
