I have a broadband connection have a PC already pluged into a wired internet connection.

I plan to buy a mac book and plug it into a telephone socket in an other room to accsess the internet.

Yes you can do it but you will still need a router. If your current modem is a usb type then you will need to buy a modem router. Most of these come as a wireless router but don't worry, you can turn the wireless off. Your next problem is getting a wire to your bedroom upstairs. Cheapest place is on ebay for a netwrok cable. You would get one for about £8 for a 15/20metre cable.

As you mac book will come with a wireless card why don't you just set up a wireless network. It will be fine if you secure it.

If you bought another modem like you have already you could try plugging it in to your upstairs telephone socket but not sure if this would work having 2 modems with 1 broadband connection. May try it with my spare one and see if it works.
