Vernon, Manchester, Windsor, Enfield, Those are pretty good places in CT that are actually close to things. Enfield is also one of the cheepest of the 4.
If you aren't too afraid to live in Mass, I could suggest Oxford, Webster, Auburn, Milbury, or any of the towns in that area. They are all pretty close to Worcester, but still have the country-ish feel and relatively cheap homes.
I live in the Springfield, MA area personally, and you can get a really nice house for abt $150,000 around here in some good neighborhoods.

I am from the New Haven area of CT, and I would say Checkout the shoreline it's a beatiful place to live. In particular, Branford, Guilford, Clinton, and Madison are very very very nice. And don't listen to Sircharles's Block Island.....I'ts not in CT. Goodluck.
