somewhat embaracing but hey. I have ants coming into my house. I do not want to spray for them even outside as they do have access to some of my open air cages and I do not want to poison my herps. its like they appeared overnight and the things are everywhere little tiny black ones. and they don't pay rent or their share of the utilities. am I going to be restricted to sticky traps or is there another way? I do not mind paying an exterminator but I do not know what they could use that will not harm my herps. any thoughts? I keep a clean house so don't go there.

You can get a powder ant posion (such as borax) at any hardware type store. Take that and mix it with honey and put it out in little dishes (as long as you don't have cats or dogs). The ants then come and carry it back to their nest. This effectively eliminates all the ants pretty quickly without harming your herps.

I heard that Boric acid and jelly mixed can attract and kill the ants. I have to admit that I too have realized that I have ants and plan on using this sometime this week. I learned about this on the internet and also a local exterminator talked about this tip on a local commercial. Be sure to check with your local exterminator. Better yet call and see if they have any suggestions before hiring them. You never know they could be very helpful. Good Luck!!!!!!

We seem to be having the same problem here. Wonderful aren't they?
At one point, we took Boric acid and mixed it with peanut butter, then squished it into straw segments. (yeah, messy, but it seemed to work) Tape the segments in an area you see the ants, but is far away enough that wanted critters can't reach it.
Recaulking windows helps. Vasaline at the entrance/exit. I've use Vicks, just to make it extra nasty for 'em.
Someone told me to use coffee grounds to deter them away.
Now, to kill and keep out mites, I've used Ortho Bug-B-Gone powder and I have noticed that so far, it seems to be keeping anything else with multiple legs away. The stuff doesn't hurt reptiles, so if you want, give it a try!

Best of luck!

We have the same prob. There is a nest somewhere in the house, if you can find that then you can possibly eliminate the prob. We haven't found ours yet. Good luck!
