Depends on the person. Smart people don't use a credit-card at all but have one 'just in case'. They use it to rent a car, plane ticket, hotel reservation.
Credit card debt statistics:
United States (April 2005) $735 billion
United Kingdom (July 2004) £55.1 billion
Credit card debt is said to be increasing in the industrialized countries. The average U.S. college graduate begins his or her post-college days with more than $2,000 in credit card debt at present.

Wow. I heard the average person has $9,000 in credit card debt. I try to keep mine at a 0 balance cause I'm poor! If I get up to $400 in one month, I panic.
